In 2025 Cootamundra celebrated its iconic wattle (Cootamundra Wattle – Acacia baileyana) and Wattle Time Festival with a Festival of Lights.
This year the Festival of Lights returns:

Venue: Community Hub, 88 Main St, Grenfell
Local businesses, Councillors, Council staff and interested community members are invited to come along to hear from Dr. Suzette Searle of the Wattle Day Association, who will share images and experiences from her trip to see Australian acacias promoted as a tourist attraction along La Route du Mimosa in south-east France.
We will then have a round-table discussion to brainstorm ideas, gather opinions and determine actions for how we could enhance opportunities associated with the Weddin Wattle Trails to boost the local economy, with the added bonus of benefiting the local environment and farms.

Venue: Weddin Community Native Nursery, 43 East St, Grenfell then ‘Rosemont’, Holy Camp Rd, Grenfell.
Learn about the life cycle of wattles and the incredible contributions they make to our world throughout their life….and death!
We’ll start at the Weddin Community Native Nursery where Nursery staff will demonstrate the process of wattle propagation – from seed cleaning and tips for germination to how to care for seedlings and planting techniques.
Dr. Suzette Searle from the Wattle Day Association will give a talk titled ‘Wattles – nature’s nitrogen fertilisers’ and mention some of the research she used to be involved in with CSIRO relating to wattle seed inoculation.
Along the way, we will also hear about all the other amazing qualities of wattles from 2024 Golden Wattle Award Winner, Mikla Lewis OAM.
There will be a selection of wattle-inspired stalls to browse through over lunch and then, after lunch, participants are invited to join Mikla on a wattle walk at her property ‘Rosemont’, Holy Camp Rd, Grenfell. Here we will learn about the many different species of wattle growing locally, their ecological roles in the landscape and on-farm value.
