Dalwallinu – gateway to the world of wattles
The wildflower season in WA is from July to October, and during this time thousands of nature enthusiasts make the trip along the Great Northern Highway to see WA’s wildflowers in all their glory, including hundreds of species of wattle.
Since 1994 Dalwallinu has hosted the Wattle Week Festival in September to celebrate the wildflower season. Dalwallinu is one of 10 shires that are part of the Wildflower Country.
2024 will be the 30 Anniversary of the Wattle Week Festival, making it the longest running wattle festival in recent times.
Joy Wornes was a driving force behind the establishment of Wattle Week in the Dalwallinu Shire. Joy lived in Wubin (Dalwallinu Shire) about 250k northeast of Perth, and was a mother of four and a very active member of the community.
Joy was also a poet. Two of her wattle poems, ‘Wattle Dreams’ and ‘Wattle Blooms after Rain’ can be read on the poetry page.
